Cut from the top, furlough Fuchs first!
The UF Board of Trustees is voting on September 29th on adding a furlough policy. Here’s why it matters, and what you should know: Furloughs, or mandatory unpaid absence from work, are a better alternative than layoffs. But the choice UF is facing isn’t really ‘layoffs or furloughs.” It’s furlough the workers who keep UF running, or cut pay from the highest-paid administrators. Kent Fuchs alone takes in nearly a million dollars a year. The average librarian, professor, cleaner, or lab tech is making a fraction that amount of money.
While furloughs may eventually be necessary, they must be distributed fairly, and we must expect sacrifices from those who can most afford them before cutting wages to working families. Please click here to send a letter to UF decision-maker to tell them to cut from the top and furlough Fuchs first!
