Details and Instructions for October 24th, 2023 ACLC-LWVAC Returning Citizen Postcard Writing Event
The Alachua County Labor Coalition has offered to help the League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVFL) contact Returning Citizens (former felons) who are not yet registered to vote. The LWVFL is working in collaboration with the Florida Restoration of Rights Coalition (FRRC) to send post cards to Retuning Citizens to encourage and assist them to find out if they are eligible to vote. The LWVFL and FRRC have teamed up to provide the resources to make this reliable and convenient.
We are inviting you to help. The LWVFL has the names and addresses of the Returning Citizens and obtained funding to pay for printing and mailing post cards. But research has shown that hand-written mailings attract the most attention.
We have the post cards and are asking you to set aside some time during the October General meeting to hand write the name and address of the recipient plus a short message and affix the stamp. To protect the confidentiality of Returning Citizens, the LWVFL has established protocols. A LWV member will bring and collect the materials and be in the room when post cards are being addressed. The specific instructions you would follow are shown below and if you are willing to help please submit the confidentiality agreement online before the meeting.
Anyone who is willing to participate will submit the LWVFL confidentiality agreement online. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc70wdQ3Dtr3FRQRdYdjNjmMA_UsfmOV4CVFlKWwMtF6Dl8Gw/viewform?usp=sf_link or sign a hard copy.
- When space is available enter the small room off the meeting room.
- Address the postcards
- Block letters are best, as not everyone reads cursive.
- Write carefully because we do not have cards to replace spoiled ones.
- Print the name and address legibly and neatly in the upper half of the right-hand side of the postcard where it says TO: If it is written too low, the post office can’t process it and it will be automatically returned to LWVFL. DO NOT turn the card and write sideways in the address area or the card will likewise be returned.
- Write one of the messages shown below under the printed text. These have been developed by LWVFL legal staff so please use one exactly as shown
- CALL US! LET US HELP YOU MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD
- CALL US! LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO TRY AND RESTORE YOUR VOTE
- CALL US! IT’S WORTH IT TO FIND OUT IF YOU CAN VOTE. IT COULD IMPACT SOMEONE YOU LOVE
- Sign your first name.
- Cross out the name and address on the list when you finish your card
- Stamp the card.
- There are 45 names on each sheet. If possible, please try to complete the entire sheet.
- Give the completed cards and lists back into the league member before you leave the room
